چکیده

A ball is propelled through a random environment of obstacles oo which it rebounds with perfect reeection. What is the behaviour of the trajectory of the ball? We summarise known mathematical results concerning this model, which we calìstochastic pin-ball', and which is known also as a `Lorentz lattice gas' and a version of which is sometimes termed thèEhrenfest wind{tree model'. The rigorous theory is more extensively developed if the environment is allowed to include a positive density of space in which the ball behaves in the manner of a random walk. For a lattice model of this type, one may employ arguments of percolation theory in order to prove theorems concerning non-localisation, transience, and asymptotic normality, under certain assumptions on the environment. 1. The origins of stochastic pin-ball There is a modern version of the game of bagatelle involving a ball which is propelled about an inclined plane and which suuers deeections as a result of collisions with protruding nails. Modern pin-ball is an electriied version of this game, with a variety of obstacles and with interaction with the player. In a simpliied stochastic model for the motion of the ball, we position smooth obstacles about R 2 at random, and we then project a ball through

The Dynamics of a Simplified Pin-ball Machine

In this paper we study the dynamics of an impact oscillator with a modified reset law derived from considering a problem (the pin-ball machine) with an active impact. Typical studies of the impact oscillator consider impacts which are governed by Newton’s Law of Restitution where the velocity after impact is r times less than the incoming velocity. But in this paper we consider an active impact...

Micro ACTION PIN Compliant-Pin Connectors: Advancing the State of the Art in Press-Fit Technology

Micro ACTION PIN (MAP) connectors from Tyco Electronics have taken through-hole connector technology to a new level— significantly reducing hole diameters compared to previous designs, while retaining the assembly and operational advantages of press-fit connectors. Equally important, the inherent design attributes of MAP connectors offer electrical performance comparable to, or better than, con...

In vitro wear simulation on the RandomPOD wear testing system as a screening method for bearing materials intended for total knee arthroplasty.

The 16-station RandomPOD wear test system, previously validated for prosthetic hip wear, was used in the simulation of knee wear mechanisms with a ball-on-flat test configuration. This consisted of a CoCr pin with a ground and polished spherical bearing surface (radius 28 mm) against a conventional, gamma-sterilized UHMWPE disk in serum lubrication. The biaxial motion, consisting of x and y tra...

Shifted small deviations and Chung LIL for symmetric alpha-stable processes

Let Xα be a symmetric α-stable Lévy process with α ∈ (1, 2). We consider small ball probabilities of the following type P {‖Xα − λ f‖ < r} as r → 0, and λr → 0 or λr = c , c > 0, where ‖ · ‖ is the sup-norm and f ∈ C[0, 1] that starts at 0. We obtain the exact rate of decrease for these probabilities including constants. Using these small ball estimates, we obtain a functional LIL for Xα with a...
